Some movers quote a piano like a couch, then add "specialty" fees once they see the stairs. We price by your piano and the distance, and stairs never add to it, so there is no surprise charge at the door.

Upright pianos

Most home moves involve an upright or console piano. They are tall, top-heavy, and carry most of their weight in the cast-iron plate inside. We pad the case, strap it to a piano dolly or skid, and keep it upright through the move. Stairs are handled with enough people on the job that the piano never has to be muscled down a step.

Grand and baby grand pianos

A grand piano does not fit through a doorway on its legs. We remove the legs and pedal lyre, wrap the body, and move it on its side on a padded piano board, then reassemble it in the new room.

What affects the price

Piano moves are quoted as a flat price. Upright pianos currently run $250 to $500, and grands up to $800, depending on:

• the type and size of piano (upright, baby grand, grand)
• the distance between the two addresses

Stairs, tight turns, narrow hallways and long carries from the truck never change the price. Tell us about them anyway, so we bring the right crew and equipment, and the price we confirm is the price you pay.

After the move: tuning

Pianos usually need tuning after a move, because changes in temperature and humidity affect the strings. Most technicians suggest waiting a couple of weeks for the piano to settle in its new room first. We move pianos but do not tune them, so book a piano technician for that.
