Junk removal in New Westminster: what to know

New Westminster is small, old and partly on an island, and each of those shapes a junk job here. It was incorporated in 1859 and was British Columbia's first capital, and a lot of its housing is older stock: heritage houses with narrow staircases, and low-rise apartment blocks that never got an elevator. There are condo towers too, along the Quay. Queensborough sits apart from the rest of the city, at the upstream end of Lulu Island.

Before you book anyone, it helps to know what the City itself offers. New West has no free large-item collection. Its Special Pick-Up Service is paid and quoted, runs on Thursdays only, and collects from the curb rather than from inside. It takes most furniture and household appliances but refuses a long list, from hot tubs and pianos to renovation materials. The full rules are further down this page.

We handle the rest: things that have to be carried out of a suite, items on the City's refused list, and jobs that can't wait for a Thursday. A general New West load usually goes to Metro Vancouver's United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre, which the City describes as sitting near the New Westminster–Coquitlam border.

The jobs we get called for in New Westminster

Walk-up move-outs

When a tenant leaves a walk-up, the couch, bed and dresser come down the stairwell. The City's Special Pick-Up only collects from City property, such as the curb or beside a multi-family bin, so someone still has to get everything down there. We carry it from the suite; tell us the floor and whether the stairs are inside or out.

Heritage-house basements and attics

Older houses in Queen's Park and elsewhere tend to have narrow staircases and tight doorways, so we plan the carry route and the crew before the truck leaves.

Items the City won't collect

Several things on the City's refused list are routine for us. Hot tubs and pianos go on the specialty row of our pricing table. A hot water tank goes free as scrap metal. Toilets, sinks, tile and flooring from a renovation are ordinary debris to us. Tires are priced like the rest of the load, and electronics go through our e-waste pickup, priced separately. Drywall and asbestos we don't take at all.

Tower and strata clearouts

Downtown and Quayside buildings run on elevator bookings. Book yours, send us the window, and we plan the crew to finish inside it. The City's pickup can't collect from an underground parkade, so if your building's bins are below ground, everything has to be brought up first. We carry from the unit to the truck.

Estate and downsizing clearouts

Clearing a long-held family home or a long-occupied apartment is rarely just hauling. We sort keepsakes from the rest, set aside anything the family wants kept, and clear the remainder, usually in a day. Usable pieces are sometimes donated, though we can't promise it for any particular item.

Commercial and property management

We do one-off commercial clearouts in New West: offices, shops, job-site debris and rental turnovers, quoted by volume before we start. For regular pickup, the City offers garbage collection to businesses; call Public Works at 604-526-4691 for its options and fees.

New Westminster housing and the areas we cover

The City's Official Community Plan maps ten residential neighbourhoods: Queensborough, Connaught Heights, the West End, Moody Park, Brow of the Hill, Glenbrooke North, Queen's Park, Massey Victory Heights, McBride Sapperton, and Downtown, which takes in Quayside.

Queen's Park is a Heritage Conservation Area. Each house in it is classed as Protected or Non-protected. On a Protected house, any change visible from the street, windows and doors included, needs a Heritage Alteration Permit first; interior work, repainting, routine maintenance and changes at the back of the house do not. Clearing out a basement or attic never touches those rules; swapping street-facing windows or doors does, and that permit is the owner's to get.

Walk-ups are the other building type to plan around. Many older apartment blocks have no elevator, so every couch and dresser leaves by the stairwell.

Downtown and Quayside take in the condo towers along the Quay. Quayside's residents are represented by a board of elected strata representatives, covering an estimated 6,500 people, so expect elevator bookings and strata rules there.

Queensborough sits in the Fraser's floodplain behind perimeter dykes the City maintains, and most new buildings there have to meet a flood construction level.

What moves the price in New Westminster

Two loads of the same size can be quoted differently. These are the things that change the number, in roughly the order they matter.

FactorWhat it does to the quote
How far the pile is from the truckThe cheapest single-item rate in the table is for an item already at the curb. From inside, including a third-floor walk-up or a heritage attic, it's priced by the space it takes in the truck, confirmed before any lifting starts.
Share of the truckPriced from a single item up to a full truck, as the table shows.
Specialty itemsHot tubs and pianos, both refused by the City, are quoted per item.
Density of the loadThe centre bills by weight, so tile, concrete and wet material cost more at the scale than furniture of the same size.
Banned and stewardship itemsMattresses carry a per-unit facility charge. Fuel cans and paint can't go in a garbage load, so pull them out before we arrive. Empty propane tanks can go with the load.

Getting a truck to your door in New Westminster

Stairs before trucks. In a walk-up or a heritage house, the stairwell sets the pace. Tell us how many flights and how tight the turns are.

Resident permit parking. Some New West blocks are signed for resident permit parking. If yours is one, say so when you book so we can plan where the truck stops.

Using the street itself. The City requires a Street Occupancy Permit for the temporary closure of a street, including any part of a road, lane or sidewalk, and allows five to ten business days to process one. Disposal bins and moving trucks are among the applications it lists. If the only spot near your door is on a busy street, raise it early.

Lanes after snow. The City clears lanes only for a medical emergency or other special circumstance. After a snowfall, a pickup planned for the lane may have to move to the street.

Queensborough. It's on Lulu Island, so a load from there crosses the river on its way to the Coquitlam centre.

How to get ready for the crew in New Westminster

None of this is required — we do the lifting. Each one either saves you money or saves us a surprise on the day.

  • If it's one or two pieces of furniture you can get to the curb yourself, and Thursday suits you, compare the City's Special Pick-Up quote with ours. For a single curbside item it may well be cheaper.
  • In a Downtown or Quayside tower, book the elevator with your building first, then send us the window.
  • Renovating a Protected house in Queen's Park? Sort out any Heritage Alteration Permit before street-facing windows or doors come out. We only haul what's removed.
  • Near Hume Park or the Brunette River, keep bagged garbage in the garage until the crew arrives. The City warns that black bears come into those neighbourhoods.
  • Take paint and household hazardous waste to the Queensborough Landing Return-It depot, which the City lists as accepting both. We don't carry hazardous materials.
  • Set drywall aside; we don't haul it.
  • If the job is mostly leaves and trimmings from a house with City curbside collection, the City's extra fall collection (2 to 27 November 2026) may cover it without booking anyone.
  • Photograph the pile and the route out, and attach the photos to your quote request.

Where New Westminster junk actually goes

A general New West load usually goes to the United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre, Metro Vancouver's site at 995 United Boulevard in Coquitlam. It's the drop-off the City itself points residents to, and it's billed on Metro Vancouver's schedule, shown in the fee table above. The 10am–2pm weekday peak minimum applies at this centre.

The City's Special Pick-Up Service is the municipal option for bulky items. It is quoted per job and paid in advance, with no refunds once paid. The 2026 rates, in effect from 1 January, are a $55 minimum that includes one item, then $35 for each additional mattress, $30 for each additional box spring, and $30 for each additional appliance or piece of furniture. Collection runs on Thursdays between 7am and 4pm, with none in a week that has a statutory holiday; payment is due by Tuesday at 4:30pm for that week's Thursday. Items go out by 7am, on City property: the front or back curb, or beside a multi-family garbage bin, never in an underground parkade. Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic, and cabinets and shelving broken down. It refuses large rugs, car parts, tires, car seats, vehicle batteries, commercial appliances, electronics, hot water tanks, propane tanks, exercise equipment, pianos, bagged garbage, yard waste, construction and renovation materials (including sinks, toilets, bathtubs, hot tubs, flooring, doors and windows), and anything hazardous (City of New Westminster: Special Pick Up Service, checked 27 September 2026).

Some City options cost less than any hauler. Extra yard trimmings can go to United Boulevard free for New West residents who bring them in a personal vehicle with proof of residency. Households on City curbside collection can put out extra garbage bags with a $5 Tag-a-Bag tag; garbage is collected every two weeks. Recyclables from the curbside program can be dropped at United Boulevard or the Queensborough Landing Return-It depot at no charge.

We sometimes donate usable pieces from a load. That's never a promise, and we don't publish recycling percentages we can't evidence.

What can’t just go in the truck

Metro Vancouver bans certain materials from the garbage stream and surcharges any load that contains them, at every facility serving New Westminster. That is the main reason two loads of the same size can cost different amounts: sorting before we tip is what keeps the disposal half of your quote down. Tell us if any of these are in the pile and we will plan the load around them.

Recyclables that can't ride along in the garbage

These are banned from the garbage stream because they have somewhere better to go. Most are surcharged once they pass a share of the load, so separating them before the truck is tipped is what keeps a load cheap.

  • Beverage containers, except milk product containers
  • Glass, metal, recyclable plastic and composite containers
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Recyclable paper
  • Yard trimmings
  • Food waste
  • Clean wood
  • Expanded polystyrene packaging

When it costs extra: Most are surcharged above 5% of the load, with all banned materials combined capped at 5%. Food waste is allowed to 25% and expanded polystyrene to 20%, and those two are excluded from the combined total.

Hazardous and operational-impact materials

These are restricted because they are dangerous to handle or they damage the facility. One item is enough for a surcharge (at least $80 at Metro Vancouver facilities), plus the potential cost of removal, clean-up or remediation.

  • Propane tanks
  • Liquids and sludge, and any liquid container 205 L or larger
  • Gypsum (drywall) and mattresses, which have their own rates
  • Automobile bodies and parts
  • Wire, hose, rope and cable over 1 metre long
  • Inert fill — soil, sod, gravel, concrete and asphalt — over 0.5 cubic metres per load
  • Single objects over 100 kg, 2.5 m long or 1.2 m wide (1.0 m at the Waste-to-Energy Facility)
  • Railroad ties and creosote-treated wood
  • Giant hogweed, daphne/spurge laurel and devil's club, taken only at the Waste-to-Energy Facility
  • Hazardous waste as defined by the BC Hazardous Waste Regulation

When it costs extra: Surcharged if a single item is found in the load, plus any remediation cost.

Product stewardship materials with their own return programs

BC's Recycling Regulation gives these their own take-back programs, so they are banned from garbage loads at the facilities. Most can be returned free at a depot, which is usually cheaper than paying to dispose of them.

  • Paint and paint containers
  • Solvents, flammable liquids and gasoline
  • Pesticides
  • Oil, oil filters, oil containers and lubricating oils
  • Antifreeze and its containers
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Pharmaceuticals and medications
  • Electronics and electrical products, including metal household or commercial appliances
  • Tires

When it costs extra: Surcharged if a single item is found in the load, plus any remediation cost.

Questions

Straight answers

How much does junk removal cost in New Westminster?

The price is set by how much junk there is and what kind, from a single item at the curb up to a full truck, with the dump fees included; the pricing table above lists each range. Carrying from an upper floor costs nothing extra, and the price is confirmed before we lift anything. For comparison, the City's own Special Pick-Up starts at $55 for one item in 2026, but it runs on Thursdays only and collects from the curb.

What's the cheapest way to get rid of junk in New Westminster?

For small amounts, use the City's own options. Houses on City curbside collection can put out an extra garbage bag with a $5 Tag-a-Bag tag. Curbside recyclables can be dropped free at United Boulevard or the Queensborough Landing Return-It depot, and United Boulevard takes extra yard trimmings free from New West residents who bring them in a personal vehicle with proof of residency. One or two bulky pieces you can get to the curb yourself may cost less through the City's Special Pick-Up, quoted from $55. Appliances and scrap metal are free pickups with us. We're the better fit when there's a lot of it, it has to come out of the house, or the City won't take it.

How can I get rid of an old couch in New Westminster?

Two ways. The City's Special Pick-Up takes couches, including sectionals and hide-a-beds: request a quote online, pay it, and have the couch at the curb by 7am on the Thursday. The 2026 minimum is $55, which includes one item. Or we carry it out of your home, down the stairs if there are any, and haul it away. An item already at the curb is the single-item curbside row in the table above; from inside, it's priced by the space it takes in the truck.

What won't the City of New Westminster pick up?

The City's Special Pick-Up refuses area rugs over 4 by 4 feet, car parts, tires, car seats, vehicle batteries, commercial appliances, electronics, hot water tanks, propane tanks, exercise equipment, pianos, bagged garbage, yard waste, renovation and construction materials, and anything hazardous. Several of those we take: hot tubs and pianos as specialty items, hot water tanks free as scrap metal, renovation fixtures, tile and flooring as ordinary debris, tires priced like the rest of the load, and electronics through our separately priced e-waste pickup. We don't take drywall, asbestos or hazardous materials.

Do you rent dumpsters or bins in New Westminster?

No. We don't rent bins: our crew loads everything into our truck and takes it away in one visit, so nothing sits outside for days. If you do rent a bin and it has to go on the street, the City requires a Street Occupancy Permit for the temporary closure of any part of a road, lane or sidewalk, and allows five to ten business days to process one.

Do you offer commercial garbage pickup in New Westminster?

We do one-off commercial clearouts: offices, shops, job-site debris and rental turnovers, quoted by volume before we start. For regular pickup, the City offers garbage collection to businesses; Public Works at 604-526-4691 has the options and fees.

Do you do estate cleanouts in New Westminster?

Yes. We sort keepsakes from the rest, set aside anything the family wants to keep, and clear the remainder, usually in one day. In a walk-up or an older house with narrow stairs, describe the layout when you book so we bring enough people. Usable pieces are sometimes donated, but we can't promise it.
