Junk removal in Port Moody: what to know

Port Moody runs from the Suter Brook and Klahanie towers near the waterfront up to hillside homes on Heritage Mountain and in College Park, with Anmore, Belcarra and Ioco just beyond. That split, towers below and hills above, shapes most junk jobs here: an elevator booking at one end, a steep driveway at the other.

The City collects household waste in carts. Carts go to the curb between 5:30 and 7:30am on collection day, with the lid fully shut and the bear lock unclipped, and the standard garbage cart is 120 litres. The City's garbage pages describe cart collection only, and for large amounts of yard waste they point residents to Metro Vancouver's United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre in Coquitlam. A couch, a garage's worth of boxes or a pile of branches thicker than a green cart will take is a job for us.

Bears are the other constant. The City calls garbage and green waste carts the number one bear attractant, which is why nothing should sit outside waiting for pickup.

The jobs we get called for in Port Moody

Condo and tower clear-outs

Book the elevator or loading bay with your building, send us the window, and we carry furniture and single items down from the suite. There is no extra charge for the floor.

Hillside garages and basements

On Heritage Mountain or in College Park, everything comes up or down a steep driveway to where the truck can stop. We carry it, with no extra charge for the slope or the stairs; tell us about the driveway when you book.

Yard waste bigger than the green cart

The green cart takes branches up to 4 inches round, and the City sends larger amounts of yard waste to United Boulevard. We load and haul branches, hedge trimmings and soil by the load.

Estate and garage cleanouts

Clearing a long-held home usually takes us a day, and we can work with a key or lockbox. A garage cleanout is one flat rate, whatever is in it, with the dump fees included.

Port Moody housing and the areas we cover

Towers near the water. Suter Brook and Klahanie are the tower neighbourhoods, and jobs there run on the building's elevator and loading-bay bookings.

Hillside homes. Heritage Mountain, Heritage Woods and College Park climb the slopes, often with steep driveways and long carries between the house and the truck.

Moody Centre, Glenayre and Seaview fill in the rest; the City has held Official Community Plan workshops in Seaview.

Beyond the city. Anmore, Belcarra and Ioco sit just past Port Moody, and we serve them too.

What moves the price in Port Moody

Two loads of the same size can be quoted differently. These are the things that change the number, in roughly the order they matter.

FactorWhat it does to the quote
How much there isFrom a single item at the curb up to a full truck, as the table shows.
What kind of junkSoil and concrete are priced differently from furniture of the same size because they weigh more. Appliances and scrap metal are free.
Floors, slopes and stairsNo extra charge, from a tower suite or a hillside garage.

Getting a truck to your door in Port Moody

Pay parking. Rocky Point Park's lots, Esplanade Avenue, Murray Street and the streets of Suter Brook Village are pay parking areas. For a job there, tell us where a truck can stop.

Steep driveways. On the hillside neighbourhoods, tell us how steep the driveway is and how far the pile is from the street.

After snow. Port Moody plows Priority 1 and 2 roads around the clock, but Priority 3 roads only during weekday business hours. A hillside pickup after a snowfall may have to wait for the plow.

How to get ready for the crew in Port Moody

None of this is required — we do the lifting. Each one either saves you money or saves us a surprise on the day.

  • If it's regular household garbage that doesn't fit, compare a bigger cart: upsizing from 120 to 240 litres costs a one-time $60 fee plus a pro-rated disposal charge on your utility bill.
  • Keep bagged junk in the garage or house until the crew arrives. The City calls garbage and green waste carts the number one bear attractant.
  • If you can't move your carts because of physical challenges, the City has a pack-out service: call 604-469-4574.
  • In a tower, book the elevator or loading bay with your building first, then send us the window.
  • Set aside drywall, anything that may contain asbestos, paint, fuel and chemicals; we don't take them. Empty propane tanks can go with the load.
  • Photograph the pile and the driveway or route out, and attach the photos to your quote request.

Where Port Moody junk actually goes

Port Moody's nearest public drop-off is Metro Vancouver's United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre at 995 United Boulevard in Coquitlam, the facility the City itself points residents to for large amounts of yard waste. It charges on Metro Vancouver's schedule, shown in the fee table above, and it is shared with Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam; see junk removal in Coquitlam for the Tri-Cities hub.

Dump fees are included in our price, so none of these charges shows up as a separate line on your bill.

What can’t just go in the truck

Metro Vancouver bans certain materials from the garbage stream and surcharges any load that contains them, at every facility serving Port Moody. That is the main reason two loads of the same size can cost different amounts: sorting before we tip is what keeps the disposal half of your quote down. Tell us if any of these are in the pile and we will plan the load around them.

Recyclables that can't ride along in the garbage

These are banned from the garbage stream because they have somewhere better to go. Most are surcharged once they pass a share of the load, so separating them before the truck is tipped is what keeps a load cheap.

  • Beverage containers, except milk product containers
  • Glass, metal, recyclable plastic and composite containers
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Recyclable paper
  • Yard trimmings
  • Food waste
  • Clean wood
  • Expanded polystyrene packaging

When it costs extra: Most are surcharged above 5% of the load, with all banned materials combined capped at 5%. Food waste is allowed to 25% and expanded polystyrene to 20%, and those two are excluded from the combined total.

Hazardous and operational-impact materials

These are restricted because they are dangerous to handle or they damage the facility. One item is enough for a surcharge (at least $80 at Metro Vancouver facilities), plus the potential cost of removal, clean-up or remediation.

  • Propane tanks
  • Liquids and sludge, and any liquid container 205 L or larger
  • Gypsum (drywall) and mattresses, which have their own rates
  • Automobile bodies and parts
  • Wire, hose, rope and cable over 1 metre long
  • Inert fill — soil, sod, gravel, concrete and asphalt — over 0.5 cubic metres per load
  • Single objects over 100 kg, 2.5 m long or 1.2 m wide (1.0 m at the Waste-to-Energy Facility)
  • Railroad ties and creosote-treated wood
  • Giant hogweed, daphne/spurge laurel and devil's club, taken only at the Waste-to-Energy Facility
  • Hazardous waste as defined by the BC Hazardous Waste Regulation

When it costs extra: Surcharged if a single item is found in the load, plus any remediation cost.

Product stewardship materials with their own return programs

BC's Recycling Regulation gives these their own take-back programs, so they are banned from garbage loads at the facilities. Most can be returned free at a depot, which is usually cheaper than paying to dispose of them.

  • Paint and paint containers
  • Solvents, flammable liquids and gasoline
  • Pesticides
  • Oil, oil filters, oil containers and lubricating oils
  • Antifreeze and its containers
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Pharmaceuticals and medications
  • Electronics and electrical products, including metal household or commercial appliances
  • Tires

When it costs extra: Surcharged if a single item is found in the load, plus any remediation cost.

Does the City of Port Moody pick up large items?

The City's garbage pages describe cart collection only: carts at the curb between 5:30 and 7:30am, lids shut and bear locks unclipped. No. Keep it in the garage or house until we arrive. The City calls garbage and green waste carts the number one bear attractant, and we carry everything out ourselves.

Do you offer same-day junk removal in Port Moody?

Yes. Same-day pickup is guaranteed in Port Moody, as it is across Metro Vancouver, at no extra charge.
