Junk removal in Port Coquitlam: what to know

Port Coquitlam is mostly flat: the City's Official Community Plan calls its ground primarily low relief, with the Mary Hill area the main exception, and low-density neighbourhoods cover over a third of its land. The effort on a PoCo job is rarely the grade. It is the carry, from a basement, a detached garage, a back lane or the far side of a townhouse complex.

Check the City's free large-item pick-up first

If your items qualify, the City will take them for nothing. Each qualifying household gets, per calendar year, "2 free curbside pick-ups of 3 items maximum OR 1 free curbside pick-up of 4-6 items": furniture, mattresses sealed in clear plastic, appliances, barbecues, exercise equipment and boxed household goods. The solid waste levy must be on the property's tax bill, renters need the owner's permission, and items go to the curb by 7am on the date the City emails you (City of Port Coquitlam: Large Item Pick-Up, checked 27 September 2026).

Where the program stops, we can help:

  • Excluded items. The City won't take hot tubs, bathtubs, toilets, sinks, flooring, doors, lumber, carpets, glass, mirrors, fencing or electronics. We take hot tubs, renovation leftovers like fixtures, flooring and lumber, and electronics (through our separately priced e-waste pickup); ask us about anything else on that list. We don't take drywall, asbestos or hazardous materials.
  • Items still inside. City crews won't move anything out of the house, garage or porch. We carry from wherever it sits.
  • Past the allotment. More than six items, or a pick-up after the year's allotment is used. Requests in the last two weeks of December count against the next year.
  • No City service. Business waste isn't accepted, and homes that don't pay the garbage levy don't qualify.
  • No time to wait. City pick-ups are usually 2–5 business days out; we guarantee same-day pickup, at no extra charge.

Metro Vancouver's United Boulevard centre, just over the line in Coquitlam, is the nearest public drop-off for all three Tri-Cities, so the fee table here matches the one for junk removal in Coquitlam.

The jobs we get called for in Port Coquitlam

Hot tub removal

The City's pick-up excludes hot tubs. Once you've had the power disconnected (by an electrician if it is hardwired), we cut the tub up on site, carry the pieces out, and take the cover, steps and frame if you want. Crane or deck work is extra only when needed; the price is on the specialty items row.

Renovation leftovers

Old toilets and sinks, pulled flooring and lumber don't qualify for the City's program. They can go with the rest of the pile; drywall and asbestos can't.

Garages and basements

An older house's garage or basement can hold decades of storage, well past the City's six-item cap, and the City won't carry any of it out. We will, and the pricing table has a flat garage cleanout rate.

Suite and rental turnovers

When a tenant leaves furniture and bags behind, the landlord needs the suite cleared before the next showing. Appliances left in the unit are a free pickup.

Estate and downsizing clear-outs

The family decides what stays, and we set keepsakes and papers aside first. Most estate clear-outs are done in a day, and key or lockbox access is fine. Usable pieces are sometimes donated, but never promised.

Yard clean-ups

The City collects only the yard waste that fits in the green cart with the lid shut. Pruning, a hedge removal or old sod outgrows that quickly. We take yard waste, soil, sod and broken concrete.

Commercial and property management

Commercial waste is excluded from the City's large-item program. The OCP's industrial areas are the Davies area, Meridian Industrial Park, the Mary Hill Industrial Estates and Broadway, with newer growth in the Dominion Triangle and retail Downtown and at Northside. We clear offices, shops, job sites and rental turnovers, quoted by volume.

Port Coquitlam housing and the areas we cover

The OCP dates PoCo's neighbourhoods in layers. Lincoln Park and Mary Hill grew from the 1950s onwards, Riverwood and Citadel Heights in the 1980s and '90s, and Fremont and the Dominion Avenue area are the newest. Apartment buildings are concentrated Downtown, which is becoming mixed-use, and around the Northside centre.

That layering shows up in the work. Older houses have had decades to fill a basement or garage. Townhouse complexes in the newer areas bring strata rules and scarce visitor parking. Downtown and Northside buildings usually mean an elevator or loading area to book.

The OCP also permits secondary suites in detached houses, duplexes and triplexes, plus accessory dwelling units, so a property may have a tenant as well as an owner.

Lincoln Park
One of the established neighbourhoods, from the 1950s onwards.
Mary Hill
Built up from the 1950s, on the city's main rise toward the Fraser.
Riverwood
Developed in the 1980s and '90s.
Citadel Heights
1980s–'90s housing on some of the city's higher ground.
Fremont
One of PoCo's newest residential areas.
Dominion Avenue
Newer housing along Dominion Avenue.
Downtown
Mixed-use centre with apartments and the West Coast Express station.
Northside
Commercial centre with a cluster of apartment buildings.

What moves the price in Port Coquitlam

Two loads of the same size can be quoted differently. These are the things that change the number, in roughly the order they matter.

FactorWhat it does to the quote
Truck space usedThe base of the quote, from the single item curbside row up to a full truck.
The carryBasement stairs, a walk from the lane or across a complex, or an elevator: no extra charge, but tell us when you book.
Soil, sod and concreteMetro Vancouver restricts inert fill over half a cubic metre per load, so a large pile is split across loads.
Specialty itemsHot tubs are quoted per tub; crane or deck work is added only when needed.
Separated yard wasteYard trimmings have a lower facility rate than garbage.
Appliances, electronics, tiresAppliances are free. Electronics go through our e-waste pickup, priced separately. Tires are priced like the rest of the load.

Getting a truck to your door in Port Coquitlam

Mostly level. The OCP calls the city mostly low relief, with Mary Hill and Citadel Heights among its higher areas. If your driveway is steep anyway, tell us.

Back lanes. The City has 17 km of gravel lanes and says most of its lanes are unpaved. Let us know whether the pile is nearer the lane or the street.

Townhouse complexes. Visitor parking is often tight. Ask the strata where a truck can stand.

Apartments. In Downtown and Northside buildings, book the elevator and loading area, then send us the window.

How to get ready for the crew in Port Coquitlam

None of this is required — we do the lifting. Each one either saves you money or saves us a surprise on the day.

  • Check the City's large-item pick-up first. If you qualify and have six or fewer items on its list, it's free.
  • Don't set items out early. The City treats anything put out before a confirmed pick-up date as illegal dumping, which can be fined; for our curbside rate, bring it out on the booked day.
  • For a hot tub, get the power disconnected (an electrician, if hardwired) and drain it a day or two ahead if you can.
  • Take paint, solvents, pesticides, old gasoline and car batteries to PoCo Return-It on Kingsway, free. Empty propane tanks can go with the load; full ones can't.
  • Drywall stays out of the pile: we don't take it.
  • Send photos with your quote request, including the route out.

Where Port Coquitlam junk actually goes

At 995 United Boulevard in Coquitlam, Metro Vancouver's United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre is the closest public facility to Port Coquitlam. Its rates are in the table above, and its minimum is higher from 10am to 2pm on weekdays. The site has a free recycling area and a paid area for garbage, so sorting before the drop matters.

Several items are banned from garbage loads altogether (see the restrictions below). For the household ones, PoCo Return-It on Kingsway takes paint, pesticides, flammable liquids, old gasoline and car batteries free (City of Port Coquitlam: Waste Disposal Alternatives, checked 27 September 2026). We pick up appliances free and route electronics through our e-waste pickup.

Usable items are sometimes donated, but we don't promise it. For something that matters, the City's page above lists donation options to arrange first.

What can’t just go in the truck

Metro Vancouver bans certain materials from the garbage stream and surcharges any load that contains them, at every facility serving Port Coquitlam. That is the main reason two loads of the same size can cost different amounts: sorting before we tip is what keeps the disposal half of your quote down. Tell us if any of these are in the pile and we will plan the load around them.

Recyclables that can't ride along in the garbage

These are banned from the garbage stream because they have somewhere better to go. Most are surcharged once they pass a share of the load, so separating them before the truck is tipped is what keeps a load cheap.

  • Beverage containers, except milk product containers
  • Glass, metal, recyclable plastic and composite containers
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Recyclable paper
  • Yard trimmings
  • Food waste
  • Clean wood
  • Expanded polystyrene packaging

When it costs extra: Most are surcharged above 5% of the load, with all banned materials combined capped at 5%. Food waste is allowed to 25% and expanded polystyrene to 20%, and those two are excluded from the combined total.

Hazardous and operational-impact materials

These are restricted because they are dangerous to handle or they damage the facility. One item is enough for a surcharge (at least $80 at Metro Vancouver facilities), plus the potential cost of removal, clean-up or remediation.

  • Propane tanks
  • Liquids and sludge, and any liquid container 205 L or larger
  • Gypsum (drywall) and mattresses, which have their own rates
  • Automobile bodies and parts
  • Wire, hose, rope and cable over 1 metre long
  • Inert fill — soil, sod, gravel, concrete and asphalt — over 0.5 cubic metres per load
  • Single objects over 100 kg, 2.5 m long or 1.2 m wide (1.0 m at the Waste-to-Energy Facility)
  • Railroad ties and creosote-treated wood
  • Giant hogweed, daphne/spurge laurel and devil's club, taken only at the Waste-to-Energy Facility
  • Hazardous waste as defined by the BC Hazardous Waste Regulation

When it costs extra: Surcharged if a single item is found in the load, plus any remediation cost.

Product stewardship materials with their own return programs

BC's Recycling Regulation gives these their own take-back programs, so they are banned from garbage loads at the facilities. Most can be returned free at a depot, which is usually cheaper than paying to dispose of them.

  • Paint and paint containers
  • Solvents, flammable liquids and gasoline
  • Pesticides
  • Oil, oil filters, oil containers and lubricating oils
  • Antifreeze and its containers
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Pharmaceuticals and medications
  • Electronics and electrical products, including metal household or commercial appliances
  • Tires

When it costs extra: Surcharged if a single item is found in the load, plus any remediation cost.

Questions

Straight answers

Does the City of Port Coquitlam pick up large items for free?

Yes, for qualifying households. Each calendar year you get two free curbside pick-ups of up to three items, or one of four to six. The solid waste levy has to be on your property tax bill, and renters need the owner's permission. You book online, the City emails a date, and items go to the curb by 7am that day. It won't take hot tubs, renovation materials, carpets, glass, electronics or business waste, and its crews won't carry anything out of the house or garage. That's where we come in. (City of Port Coquitlam, checked 27 September 2026.)

How do I get rid of an old couch or other furniture in Port Coquitlam?

If you qualify for the City's large-item pick-up, furniture is on its list. Upholstered pieces must be dry and free of bed bugs, mattresses sealed in clear plastic, and everything at the curb by 7am on your date. If it's still inside, over the City's limit, or needs to go sooner, we carry it out. One piece left at the curb is the single item curbside row in the pricing table. Usable furniture is sometimes donated, but we can't promise it.

Do you remove hot tubs in Port Coquitlam?

Yes. The City's large-item pick-up won't take hot tubs. You have the power disconnected first (an electrician, if it's hardwired) and drain the tub if you can. We cut it up on site, carry the pieces out, and take the cover, steps and frame if you want them gone. A crane or deck work is extra only when the tub needs it. The price is quoted for your tub.

Do you rent dumpsters or bins in Port Coquitlam?

No, we don't rent bins. Our crew does the loading and hauls everything away in one visit, so nothing sits on your driveway for days. Our blog post on junk removal vs bin rental compares the two.

Can you do an estate cleanout in Port Coquitlam?

Yes. The family decides what stays, and we set keepsakes and documents aside before we start. Most estate clear-outs take a day, and key or lockbox access is fine if nobody can be there. Appliances are a free pickup. Usable items are sometimes donated, but we can't promise that for any particular piece.

Do you do commercial junk removal in Port Coquitlam?

Yes. The City's large-item program doesn't accept commercial waste, so businesses need their own arrangement. We clear offices, shops, job sites and rental turnovers, quoted by volume after a quick look at the job. Drywall, asbestos and hazardous materials are the exceptions.

What's the minimum charge for junk removal in Port Coquitlam?

Our smallest job is one item left at the curb, the single item curbside row in the pricing table above. Anything bigger is priced by how much of the truck it fills. If you qualify for the City's large-item pick-up and your items are on its list, that route is free.

What won't you take from a Port Coquitlam home?

Drywall, asbestos and hazardous materials. Paint, solvents, pesticides, old gasoline and car batteries can go free to PoCo Return-It at 2577 Kingsway Avenue. Appliances are a free pickup, electronics go through our e-waste pickup, which is priced separately, and tires are priced like the rest of your load.

Do you offer same-day junk removal in Port Coquitlam?

Yes. Same-day pickup is guaranteed in Port Coquitlam at no extra charge.
