Getting rid of big items from a condo or apartment in Metro Vancouver

How to get a couch, mattress or appliance out of a condo or apartment: building rules, elevator bookings, and options that don't leave it by the dumpster.

Metro Vancouver Junk Removal & Movers

In a house, getting rid of a couch means carrying it to the curb. In a condo or apartment, there's an elevator to book, a loading area to find, a strata with rules, and nowhere to leave it while you wait for a city pickup. Here's how to do it without a fine.

Don't leave it by the dumpster

The building's garbage room isn't for furniture, mattresses or appliances, and leaving them there or in the lane is illegal dumping. Mattresses and appliances are also banned from garbage loads in Metro Vancouver (Metro Vancouver Disposal Ban Program Manual, checked 21 September 2026), so they can't go out with the building's garbage either.

Check the building's rules first

  • Elevator booking: most towers want large items moved during a booked window.
  • Move hours and loading area: where a truck can stop, and when.
  • Fees: under BC's Strata Property Regulation, a strata can charge a fee for using common property only if it's reasonable and set out in a bylaw or a ratified rule. Our condo move guide explains the rule.

Your options

City large-item pickup. Many programs are limited to homes on city collection, and all pick up from the curb, so they often don't suit condos. Check the rules for your city in our disposal guide.

A dump run. Possible if you have a truck, help to carry it, and an elevator booking. Mattresses go to recycling at $20 each at Metro Vancouver centres (Metro Vancouver's 2026 fee schedule, checked 21 September 2026).

The retailer. If you're replacing it, ask the store to take the old one when they deliver the new one.

A crew that carries it out. Usually the simplest in a tower: book the elevator window, and the crew carries everything down and out.

What we do in condos and apartments

We carry items out from any floor, with no extra charge for floors or elevators, and dump fees included. You book the elevator or loading bay with your building and tell us the window. Prices depend on how much of the truck it fills; see our pricing page. Appliances go free, and mattresses go to recycling. For single items, see how to get rid of a couch and how to get rid of an old fridge.
