How to get rid of a couch in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey
Your options for an old couch, sofa bed or sectional in Metro Vancouver: city pickup, a dump run, donating it, or a crew that carries it out. Costs compared.
Metro Vancouver Junk Removal & Movers
A couch is the item people most often get stuck with. It won't fit in a car, it's awkward on stairs, and it's far too big for the garbage cart. Here are the four real ways to get rid of one in Metro Vancouver, what each costs, and which one fits your situation.
Option 1: Your city's large-item pickup
Several Metro Vancouver cities collect a few large items a year from the curb. A couch usually qualifies, but each city sets its own allowance, booking rules and refused-items list. Richmond, both Langleys, Port Coquitlam and Delta all run programs, while New Westminster's is paid and White Rock doesn't collect large items at the curb. Our guide to dump fees and large-item pickup lists each city's rules with links to the city's own page.
The catch: every program collects from the curb only, so someone still has to carry the couch out, and you wait for your booked date.
Best for: a house on city collection, two people who can carry it, and no rush.
Option 2: A dump run
If you have a truck or trailer, you can take a couch to a recycling and waste centre and pay by weight as garbage. At Metro Vancouver centres, a garbage load under a tonne is $182/tonne, but a single couch weighs far less than that, so what you pay is usually set by the load minimum: $15 per load off-peak, or $25 per load from 10am to 2pm on weekdays at most centres, plus a $5 per load transaction fee (Metro Vancouver's 2026 fee schedule, checked 21 September 2026).
Best for: anyone who already has a truck and someone to help lift. Add up the truck rental and your time before you assume it's cheapest.
Option 3: Donate or sell it
If the couch is clean and in good shape, someone may want it. Charity stores and furniture banks each have their own condition rules, and many won't take upholstered furniture with stains, tears or pet hair, so check with them first. Listing it free online often works for a good couch, as long as the buyer can collect it.
Option 4: A crew that carries it out
If you can't lift it, can't wait for a city date, or the couch is in a basement or an upstairs room, a junk removal crew does the carrying.
- A couch we carry out of your home: $99 to $349, depending on its size and how much of the truck it fills. The dump fee is included and there's no extra charge for stairs.
- A single couch you've already put at the curb: the single-item curbside rate, $69 to $99.
We take sectionals, sofa beds, recliners and loveseats, and take them apart where needed to get them through doorways without scuffing walls. Same-day pickup is available across Metro Vancouver at no extra charge. See furniture removal and our pricing page.
Which option is cheapest?
- A house with a city pickup program, and you can wait: city large-item pickup.
- You own a truck and have a helper: a dump run, usually just the load minimum.
- A clean couch in good shape: donate it or give it away.
- A condo, no truck, a basement couch, or it has to go this week: a crew that carries it out.
Common questions
Can I leave a couch in the lane or beside a dumpster?
No. That's illegal dumping, and cities can fine for it.
Can you take a sofa bed? It's heavy.
Yes. Sofa beds are heavy because of the metal frame inside, but they're priced like any couch: by size and truck space, with no extra charge for stairs.
Do you take other furniture at the same time?
Yes. Mattresses, dressers, tables and anything else can go in the same trip; larger loads are priced by how much of the truck they fill.
