Single-family homes and duplexes are the City's curbside customers. The green cart, for food scraps and yard waste together, is collected every week; the blue recycling cart and the grey garbage cart go on alternating weeks. The City served 26,614 homes this way in 2025.
Townhouses, condos, apartments, mobile home parks and gated communities are outside City collection. The strata, landlord or property manager hires a private hauler for the regular bins, and since April 2020 the regional and City bylaws have required recycling, compostables and garbage to be collected separately at every property. A one-off clear-out, like a move-out or a locker's worth of furniture, isn't part of that contract.
Farms and acreages cover most of the city. About 72% of Abbotsford's land is in the Agricultural Land Reserve, and the City counted more than 1,300 farms in 2015. Those properties come with barns, workshops and outbuildings, and clearing one is a bigger job than a garage.
McKee is the mountainside neighbourhood the City is planning around open space and trails, and the UDistrict is the area around the University of the Fraser Valley's Abbotsford campus.
Mission mixes established neighbourhoods near downtown, newer subdivisions on the hillsides, and rural acreages toward Silverdale and Hatzic, where larger lots mean yard waste, dirt removal and full garage and shed clear-outs.
