Moving from BC to Alberta: the 2026 checklist
Moving from Vancouver to Calgary or Edmonton? Health coverage, driver's licence and vehicle deadlines on both sides, plus winter driving rules.
Metro Vancouver Junk Removal & Movers
Moving from Metro Vancouver to Calgary, Edmonton or anywhere else in Alberta means two sets of paperwork: closing things off in BC and registering in Alberta. Most of it has a deadline, and the health-coverage dates matter most. Here's the whole list, with each rule linked to the government page it comes from.
Health coverage: the dates to get right
BC side. When you move to another Canadian province, MSP covers you for the rest of the month you leave plus two consecutive months. Tell Health Insurance BC your departure date and new address as soon as possible, and apply to your new province's plan as soon as you arrive (Province of BC, Leaving B.C. permanently, checked 5 October 2026).
Alberta side. You must register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) within 3 months of establishing residency, and coverage begins on the first day of the third month after you establish residency. Alberta's own example: if you become a resident on July 12, your coverage starts October 1 (Government of Alberta, checked 5 October 2026).
Put together, the two are designed to meet: BC covers the gap while Alberta's waiting period runs. That only works if you tell Health Insurance BC you've left and register with Alberta on time.
Your driver's licence and car
- Licence: exchange your BC driver's licence for an Alberta one within 90 days of moving. You don't need a knowledge test or road test for a licence from another Canadian province (Government of Alberta, checked 5 October 2026).
- Vehicle registration: change to an Alberta registration within 90 days (Government of Alberta, checked 5 October 2026). The same page explains the out-of-province vehicle inspection and when it applies.
- BC insurance: before you leave BC, go to an Autoplan broker to update your insurance (ICBC, checked 5 October 2026).
The drive
The usual route to Calgary is the Coquihalla to Kamloops, then east on the Trans-Canada Highway through Revelstoke, Rogers Pass, Golden and Banff. For Edmonton, one common route is the Coquihalla to Kamloops, Highway 5 north to Tête Jaune Cache, then Highway 16 through Jasper.
If you're moving between October and April, plan for winter. Winter tires or chains are required on most BC highways from October 1 to April 30 (Province of BC, checked 5 October 2026). Check DriveBC for conditions before you set off.
A timeline that works
Six to eight weeks out
- Get moving quotes and book the date.
- Decide what isn't coming. Long-distance moves are priced partly on how much is moving, so clearing out first saves money.
- If you rent, give notice as your tenancy agreement requires.
Two to four weeks out
- Book the elevator and loading bay at both buildings if you're in a strata or rental tower.
- Arrange utilities, internet and mail forwarding.
- Tell Health Insurance BC your departure date and new address.
After you arrive
- Register for AHCIP right away.
- Exchange your licence and register the car in Alberta within 90 days.
- Update your address with the Canada Revenue Agency, your bank and your employer.
