The hourly rate a moving company advertises is rarely what you end up paying. The gap is filled with fees that show up on moving day or on the final invoice. Here are the hidden charges Vancouver movers do not put in the ad, and how to avoid them.

Double drive time

Some companies charge "travel time" from their depot to your home and from your destination back to the depot. In a region as spread out as Metro Vancouver, that can add an hour or more of billable time you never see the crew working. Ask whether travel time is included or extra, and how it is calculated.

Fuel surcharges

A separate fuel surcharge, often a percentage of the bill, is one of the most common add-ons. It is easy to miss because it is applied at the end. A transparent mover builds fuel into the rate.

Stair and elevator fees

Living above the ground floor can cost extra with some companies — a flat charge per flight of stairs, or a fee when an elevator is involved. For condo-heavy areas like Yaletown, Brentwood, and Metrotown, this fee hits a lot of movers. Confirm whether your floor affects the price.

Heavy and bulky item charges

Pianos, safes, treadmills, and large appliances often carry surcharges, which is fair when they need special handling. The problem is when they are not disclosed until the crew sees the item. Mention heavy pieces when you book so the quote is accurate.

Packing materials

If the movers wrap and box your belongings, some charge for every roll of tape, blanket, and box on top of labour. Ask whether materials are included or billed separately, and get an estimate either way.

Minimum hours and rounding

Many hourly movers have a minimum, often three or four hours, and round up to the next block of time. A two-hour move can be billed as four. Ask about the minimum and how time is rounded before you commit.

How to get a true all-in quote

The fix is simple: ask for one all-in number that includes labour, travel time, fuel, stairs, and any item surcharges. Get it in writing. If a company cannot or will not give you that, treat the low advertised rate as the start of the bill, not the end.
