Metro Vancouver Moving & Junk Removal

Not everything can be thrown in a bin or dropped at the landfill in British Columbia. Metro Vancouver and provincial rules ban a range of materials, and getting it wrong can mean rejected loads or fines. Here is what cannot go in a dumpster, and what to do instead.

Hazardous materials

Paint, solvents, motor oil, gasoline, pesticides, and cleaning chemicals are all prohibited. Many of these are covered by product-stewardship programs in BC and can be returned to designated depots, often for free. Never pour them down a drain or mix them into general waste.

Electronics and appliances

E-waste — computers, monitors, TVs, printers — is banned from regular disposal under BC's recycling regulations and must go to registered electronics recyclers. Large appliances are also restricted, and fridges, freezers, and air conditioners need their refrigerant removed by a qualified handler before disposal.

Mattresses

Mattresses and box springs are banned from many Metro Vancouver disposal streams because they jam equipment and are highly recyclable. They need to go to a mattress recycling facility, which usually charges a per-unit fee.

Tires

Tires are not accepted in regular waste in BC. They are covered by a provincial recycling program and should be returned to a participating retailer or depot.

Construction and renovation materials

Some renovation debris is fine, but specific materials are restricted. Drywall often has to be separated and taken to a facility that accepts it, and anything containing asbestos, common in older Metro Vancouver homes, requires testing and certified hazardous-material handling. Never put suspected asbestos in a bin.

Yard and green waste

In many municipalities, green waste is banned from the garbage stream and must be composted. Soil and clean fill also have their own disposal routes and are usually not accepted in a standard dumpster.

Other banned items

Propane tanks, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and smoke detectors all have dedicated recycling or return programs and are kept out of landfills. When in doubt, assume anything pressurized, chemical, or electronic needs a special route.

The easy way to stay compliant

Sorting all of this yourself is the hard part. A professional junk removal crew already knows the Metro Vancouver and BC rules, separates restricted items, and routes each material to the right facility. You avoid rejected loads, fines, and trips to five different depots.

We sort every load for donation, recycling, and proper disposal under Metro Vancouver and WorkSafeBC rules. For junk removal that handles the restricted stuff correctly, call 604-348-7640.
